Javaabu Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Arushad Ahmed has been conferred the National Award of Recognition for his contributions to the field of Communication and Information Technology, specifically in computer software and software application development.
The award was conferred by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and presented at the official ceremony held in HA. Utheemu on 15 August 2026 to commemorate this year's National Day.
The recognition marks another significant milestone in Arushad's career as a software engineer, system architect, and artificial intelligence researcher, acknowledging more than a decade of contributions to software development, emerging technologies, and national digital capacity in the Maldives.
Arushad began his career in software development as a freelance developer in 2013 before co-founding Javaabu in 2016. Today, as Javaabu's CTO, he leads the company's technical vision and innovation strategy and serves as system architect across several large-scale projects.
Throughout his career, Arushad has contributed to the development of more than 100 websites, information systems, and mobile applications for government institutions, private organisations, and other clients. Among the major projects he has served on as System Architect and Lead Developer are the Visit Maldives Official Destination Website, Job Center Website, eTukuri eCommerce Platform, and Kiyeveni eLearning Portal.
His work extends beyond conventional software development into artificial intelligence and machine learning. Arushad led the founding and technical development of DhivehiGPT, Javaabu's Dhivehi-focused artificial intelligence platform, spearheading the research, training, and deployment of AI models designed for the Dhivehi language.
Through this work, he has contributed to advancing areas such as Dhivehi content generation, optical character recognition, language technologies, and other AI-powered services. He continues to oversee Javaabu's machine learning research efforts and has published academic research in artificial intelligence, contributing to both applied and academic development in the field.
Arushad has also played an active role in strengthening AI education and awareness in the Maldives. As a Technical Panel Member of the ICT Sector Council at the Maldives National Skills Development Authority, he has contributed to the formulation of the national AI curriculum across multiple qualification levels and to efforts aimed at maintaining the quality of related training programmes.
Through Javaabu Academy and other educational initiatives, Arushad has helped train hundreds of students in technology-related fields. He has also conducted workshops and awareness sessions for government institutions, educational organisations, industry stakeholders, and communities, supporting wider understanding of artificial intelligence, software development, and digital transformation.
Arushad holds a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science with First Class honours from the University of Nottingham, Malaysia, where he received the Best Final Year Project Award. He later completed an MSc in Artificial Intelligence with Distinction at the University of St Andrews in the United Kingdom, where he also received the School of Computer Science Award.
His academic and professional achievements have received national recognition on several occasions. Arushad received the President's Award for Special Achievement in 2019 for his undergraduate academic performance and the National Youth Award in 2021 in the area of Business and Economy.
In 2025, he received the President's Award for Special Achievement for the second time, following his outstanding postgraduate achievement in the Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence programme at the University of St Andrews.
Arushad's latest recognition also follows a National Award of Recognition received by fellow Javaabu Co-Founder and CEO Mohamed Jailam. Jailam received the National Award of Recognition in 2025 for his contributions to the ICT sector, specifically in computer software and software application development.
The national recognition received by both of Javaabu's co-founders reflects the growing acknowledgement of the role locally built technology and Maldivian technical expertise can play in the country's development. Since its founding, Javaabu has worked across software engineering, digital platforms, artificial intelligence, research, education, and skills development, with a focus on building technology that responds to local needs while meeting modern international standards.
From developing major public-facing digital platforms and information systems to investing in Dhivehi language AI and nurturing the next generation of technology professionals, Javaabu's journey has been closely tied to the wider development of the Maldives' digital ecosystem.
The recognition of its co-founders at the national level is also an encouragement to continue investing in homegrown research, technical talent, and innovation, while demonstrating what Maldivian technology professionals can contribute both nationally and internationally.
The entire Javaabu team extends its warmest congratulations to Arushad on receiving the National Award of Recognition and celebrates this well-deserved acknowledgement of his sustained contributions to communication and information technology in the Maldives.
