New app aims to give blind users real-time access to Dhivehi content

Javaabu Academy and the Blind and Visually Impaired Society of Maldives (BVISM) have signed an agreement to build a new application that will allow blind users to listen to Dhivehi content in real time. The project is funded through UNDP’s Miyaheli 2022 programme and was formally signed at the BVISM office.

The purpose of the app is to make Dhivehi digital content accessible through audio so that individuals without sight can read documents and follow information more easily. Javaabu’s Managing Director, Mohamed Jailam, said the team has focused heavily on creating a smooth listening experience without the audio delays common in similar tools.

The first version of the Text-to-Speech app will be released for Android, with Windows and iOS versions planned afterwards. The app will also support reading PDF documents written in Dhivehi and converting Dhivehi text found in images into audio.

BVISM’s Organising Secretary, Abdurazzaq, said the app will be especially useful for blind students who depend on Dhivehi learning material. He noted that it could remove long-standing barriers in reading and writing and help create greater equality for the blind community.

Both Javaabu and BVISM believe the project will mark a meaningful step forward for digital accessibility in the Maldives. With the support of the Miyaheli initiative, they hope the new app will widen opportunities for visually impaired Maldivians and make digital services more inclusive.
