Maldivian Tech Delegation Explores Estonia's Digital Innovation Ecosystem

A Maldivian ICT delegation, including Javaabu CEO Mohamed Jailam, joined President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's official visit to Estonia, engaging with leading technology institutions, digital governance bodies, and education innovators across the country. The multi-day engagement offered firsthand exposure to Estonia's globally acclaimed digital ecosystem—widely regarded as one of the most advanced in the world.

The visit was coordinated by the President's Office, with participation from the State Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Dr. Mohamed Kinaanath, Digital Strategist Siyah Khaleel, and representatives from the Maldivian ICT sector. Javaabu represented the private-sector tech community of the Maldives.

Day 1: Engagement with Kood/Jõhvi

The delegation met with Kood/Jõhvi, an innovative, mentor-free programming school shaping the next generation of Estonia's tech workforce. Discussions focused on modern educational models, scalable digital-skills training, and potential frameworks the Maldives could adopt to strengthen local digital talent development.

Day 2: Learning from Start-up Estonia

Meetings with Start-up Estonia, a government initiative supporting the country's thriving startup ecosystem, provided insights into how Estonia fosters entrepreneurship, attracts global investment, and builds support networks for high-growth technology companies. The delegation explored how similar structures could accelerate digital innovation in the Maldives.

Day 3: Engagement with Unicorn Squad

The team also connected with Unicorn Squad, an Estonian initiative dedicated to empowering girls through early technology education. The session highlighted success stories and avenues for collaboration to help the Maldives enhance girls' participation in STEM fields.

Day 4: Dialogue with the Estonian Association of Information Technology and Telecommunications (ITL)

The delegation met with ITL, a major force behind Estonia's digital transformation for more than 25 years. ITL provided a comprehensive view of how public–private cooperation has shaped Estonia's digital identity systems, e-governance, and innovation-driven policies. Nine ITL member companies participated, sharing case studies and best practices relevant to Maldivian digital infrastructure development.
